Jeonghee Kim

The purpose of this study is to understand how the aspect of performing art of Cheondo-Gyo developed at that time and examine its meaning in the context of Japanese colonial period by referring Cheondo-Gyohwe-Weolbo. For this purpose we looked up content of performing art in Cheondo-Gyohwe-Weolbo, made index, sorted them by type and studied how each type developed. This study examines various aspect of performing art of Cheondo-Gyo such as song, instrumental performance, military band, traditional performing art, dance, drama and others. First, songs include Cheondeok-Song(religious songs of Cheondo-Gyo), Changga(modern songs), Children's Song, and Korean traditional songs. Secondly, instrumental performances include accompaniment of singing and dancing, instrumental solo and ensemble, and performances of military band etc. Thirdly, traditional perfomorming arts include instrumental music, Jeongjae(court dance), Jultagi(tightrope feat), and ensemble of Western instruments and Korean traditional instruments. Fourthly, dance is thought to be Western dance such as Russian dance. Fifthly, dramas include general drama, children’s drama, musical drama, lyric drama, fairy tale, amateur theatricals, and comic drama. Sixthly, other types of performing arts were played, including gymnastics, magic, jokes, old tale, costume parade, and playing motion picture. Lastly, Wonyu-hwe(a garden party). The results of this study are as follows. First, mordern elements are reflected in songs apart from Korean traditional vocal music but traditional elements are not being inherited. The lyrics reflect the spirit of the times but its form has limitations such as generalization of 7.5-Jo(syllabic meter) after 1920s which were intent of Japanese. Secondly, traditional performing arts were played at important events such as birthday of important person, sixtieth birthday and used as medium for forming emotional bond and entertainment. However, they were not considered as a means of mission work and enlightenment, but mostly western music were. Thirdly, dramas show progressive movement such as associating with labor movement, promoting national unity and spirit of independence and attempt for mordern drama. However, interest in elements of traditional drama like Pansori(a solo musical drama) and Talchum(a masque dance) was not observed and its consideration on succession of traditions was poor same as in song. Fourthly, Wonyu-hwe, where various performing art was performed, was a medium of emoitional unity among the people during Japanese colonial period for avoiding political oppression and an effective means of unifying believers of Cheondo-Gyo. Fifthly, performing art activities in Cheondo-Gyo were diverse and modern. They also provided opportunity not only to member of Cheondo-Gyo but ordinary people to enjoy various performing arts. Sixthly, the primary objective of Cheondo-Gyo performing art is edification and propagation of religion but by progressivity of Cheondo-Gyo doctrine and ethnic identity it also overcomes oppression of Japanese Imperialism and overcomes feudalism and enhances ethnic competence. Seventhly, self-reflection and efforts are needed for the limitations of failing to inherit national style and traditional elements, which is a task that performing arts culture in Cheondo-Gyo should solve in the future. This is results of limitation of the time, along with Japanese colonial period, that emphasized embracing new culture but regarded tradition as an object to get over not as an object to succeed and their own limitations that not being able to form independant performing art culture of Cheondo-Gyo.
