서간문을 통해 본 소세키(漱石)의 교사 생활에 대한 고찰
이 연구의 목적은 나쓰메 소세키의 글과 강연, 지인들과 주고받은 서간문을 통해 그의 교사 생활에 대해 살펴보는 것이다. 그는 제국대학 시절에 작성한 교육학 논문 『중학개량책』에서 당시의 미비한 학교 제도와 교육환경에 대해 비판하면서 바람직한 교사의 자질에 대해 제언하였다. 이후 마쓰야마 중학교에서 영어 교사를 하며 직접 교육 현장도 경험하였다. 소설 『도련님』은 마쓰야마 중학교에서의 교사 경험을 토대로 당시 교육 현실을 밝고 유쾌하게 묘사하여 지금까지도 많은 사랑을 받는 작품이다. 소세키가 쓴 1895년의 『우견수칙』과 1914년의 『나의 개인주의』 강연에서 자신은 교육자로 적합하지 않은 사람이며 본인이 원해서 교사가 된 것이 아니라 어쩔 수 없이 교사가 되었다고 했지만, 그는 최고학부를 나온 엘리트 출신으로 더 나은 출셋길이 있었음에도 시골 중학교를 시작으로 고등학교, 고등사범학교, 제국대학 등에서 강의하며 약 15년 동안 성실하게 제자들을 가르쳤다. 비록 교사라는 직업이 처음부터 본인이 원해서 선택한 천직은 아니었을지라도 소세키는 교사로서의 삶을 사는 동안은 성실하게 제자들을 가르쳤으며 그 교사 경험은 그가 작가로서 문학적인 삶을 사는 데 좋은 토대가 되었다.
A Study on Soseki’s Teacher Life Through the Letter
In this paper, we looked at his teaching life through his writings, lectures, and epigrams exchanged with acquaintances. In his educational paper “Middle School Improvement Plan” written in the days of the Imperial University, he criticized the insufficient school system and educational environment at the time and suggested the desirable quality of teachers. Afterwards, he was an English teacher at Matsuyama Middle School and experienced the field of direct education. Based on his experience as a teacher at Matsuyama Middle School, the novel “Young Master” depicts the reality of education in a bright and pleasant way and is still loved to this day. In Soseki’s 1895 Woogyeon Code and 1914 My Individualism lectures, he said he was not suitable as an educator and was forced to become a teacher, but he taught his students faithfully for about 15 years, starting with rural middle school, high school, high school, and imperial university. Although his job as a teacher was not a vocation he wanted from the beginning, Soseki taught his disciples faithfully during his life as a teacher, and the teacher experience served as a good foundation for him to live a literary life as a writer.
